Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

A Sanctuary for Sri Lanka’s Gentle Giants

Nestled along the banks of the Maha Oya River in Sri Lanka’s Sabaragamuwa Province, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is a world-renowned sanctuary dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation of orphaned and injured elephants. Located about 90 kilometers from Colombo, this unique orphanage offers visitors an unforgettable opportunity to witness these majestic creatures up close in a natural and protected environment.

Established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was created to provide a safe haven for elephant calves that were left orphaned due to poaching, habitat destruction, and other threats. Starting with just a few elephants, the orphanage has since grown into a thriving sanctuary, home to over 70 elephants, making it one of the largest captive elephant herds in the world.

What to Expect at Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

A visit to Pinnawala offers an immersive experience into the daily lives of these incredible animals. From playful baby elephants to mighty adults, visitors can observe them as they interact with one another, roam freely, and enjoy their routine activities.

1. Feeding Time
One of the most heartwarming experiences at the orphanage is the elephant feeding sessions. Baby elephants are bottle-fed with milk, and visitors can watch as they eagerly drink their meals under the care of trained handlers. This is an excellent opportunity for photography and to witness the close bond between the keepers and the elephants.

2. Bathing Ritual in the Maha Oya River
A highlight of any visit to Pinnawala is the elephant bathing session. Every day, the elephants are led to the nearby Maha Oya River, where they splash, play, and cool off in the water. This mesmerizing sight allows visitors to observe elephants in their most natural behavior—rolling in the water, spraying each other, and relaxing under the warm Sri Lankan sun.

3. Elephant Conservation and Care
Pinnawala is not just an orphanage; it also plays a vital role in elephant conservation, breeding, and veterinary care. The sanctuary operates as a research and breeding center, ensuring the well-being and preservation of Sri Lanka’s elephant population. Many elephants born in Pinnawala continue to thrive under the care of experienced mahouts (elephant caretakers).
